How and Why To Credit Your Stock ProvidersHiya Darlings,
Today I am going to tackle a subject that all photo manipulation artists should pay attention to. (Yes, this means you!) It is my hope that this article will save you the headache and trouble of getting a submission declined, having to delete your work, or worse; be sued by someone because of it.
Why Properly Crediting Stock Is Important
All artists know that the secret to a great manip is finding stock that is just right for the theme you are trying to convey. On :devart: there are literally thousands of fantastic high quality images that are absolutely free. Some of these images are even created by and featuring professional models and photographers.  You could pay a lot of money for the rights to use the type of stock resources in your art that are found here free of charge. This is part of why  :devart: is unique and an amazing place for artists to frequent.
You’ll find that a lot of art groups, including :iconmanip
Why credit and notify?Hi all,
It's your friendly neighborhood Photomanipulation and Stock & Resources CVs here, eager to tell you about a problem that has become increasingly common not only in the photomanipulation community, but also in other communities throughout dA. The problem is that people are neglecting to credit AND notify stock providers that they have used their materials.

What is the overall rule and guidance about crediting your stock?
If you want to use other people's resources (including but not limited to stock photographs, brushes, and presets), dA requires that you exactly follow the rules of usage that those individuals lay out in their license or stock rules. That invariably means that you must CREDIT them with a link to their homepage at least, and NOTIFY the providers by sending them a link to your deviation, preferrably by note. Some providers require a direct link to the exact image or resource t
Art Theft: Another reason to Credit and NotifyDid you know that you can actually help protect your art from theft by crediting and notifying your stock providers? The number one most common rule to stock use is to require the artist to both credit the stock and notify the stock provider of use.  As a stock provider, I can't stress the importance of this rule enough.
I recently ran across a photo on facebook that was being passed around by a political group page ironically called; "Restoring America." This image contains stock used by :devart:'s dazzle-stock. There is no artist attribution or credit. It simply looks like another case of lifting an image from google.
When I saw the image, I went to dazzle-stock's stock image and sifted through the stock use notifications to see if I could find the owner of the original artwork. I went through every single link and gallery with no luck. I also searched :devart:'s main galleries to see if the artist credited, but did not notify. No luck there either. I realize that
Of Copyright + Premades

Disclaimer: I'm no lawyer, I do not work for deviantArt, I'm merely someone who has been doing photomanips for quite a while and has taken the time to read quite a few articles on the topic. The views expressed hereunder are mine alone. They do not reflect any "official dA opinion" nor are they to be taken as "legal advice". Furthermore, you may live in a country that hasn't signed any of the treaties that govern international copyright law, so you'd have to check with your country's national laws.
I strongly urge you to not only read the journal, but also the comments underneath it as there are a lot more examples of what you can and can't do as well as more links to information being shared by your fellow deviants!
What is Copyright?
I'll paraphrase/quote the wikipedia article on the topic for this:
"Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of an original work exclus
Photomanipulation FAQsEverything you wanted to know . . . And MORE!
This journal will (I hope) serve as a one-stop source for basic information about photomanipulation. As always, if you have questions, I will do my best to answer them or, if I don't know the answer, refer you to someone who can help you.
What is photomanipulation?
Photomanipulation is art that uses 2 or more photographic elements combined to make something new. It does not include 3D elements. For reference, see:

PE S&R Sourcing Your ResourcesSourcing Your Resources
You may think that the creation and sharing of stock and resources is a no brainer.  Clearly however its not, and there are a growing number of deviants who for some reason or another seem to not be able to grasp the basic principles.
As the last article we will be launching for Stock & Resources Project Educate week, we are going to attempt to lay it out for you in clear and easy to understand terms.
What YOU own
The gallery details for stock and resources read:
Gallery Info: Resources & Stock Images
Resources submitted by deviants for others to use in their own works and/or learn from.
Gallery Info: Stock Images

PE Article: Tips and Advice 'Atmosphere'Give your Stock some intensity.
By intensity i mean, playing with lighting and shadow to create a more intense stock portrait.
Using lighting is perfectly fine. Lighting of model stock adds a great reference for drawing/painting from. Also lighting adds atmosphere to an image and can really help to enhance the final result.
I took some mini portrait shots using a few (not all) types of lighting you could consider!
Having a few stock images/sets like this can really be useful and make your stock gallery more diverse.

Here the image contains natural light, nothing special. The advantage with natural light is that you get an image with true colours. Which can be great for skintone practice! The disadvantage is added noise and loss of quality, but with the right equipment you can get great results. I had my camera on the wrong settings for most of these so i apologise! but they are only to give you an i
PE S&R Gallery Guides - MiscatsMiscats
Miscats are as bad for your stock as missing keywords.  They cause problems in the categories you are wrongly submitting to, make our galleries look disorganised and messy, and ultimately inhibit the exposure of your hard work to other artists.
Miscats are one of the most frequently complained about issues on DA.
Common Miscats
There are several varieties we see regularly that include
:bulletred: Placing 3 quarter/cropped or portrait model stock into the full body category.
:bulletred: Placing Interior shots into the Exterior category.
:bulletred: Placing 3D renders and premade stock into the stock photography interior/exterior categories rather than into their own equivalents.
:bulletred: Placing 3D renders into 3D models - which should be reserved for the physical model files, not renders of the model.
:bulletred: Placing landscapes or scenery shots into the Places category which should be reserved for images that show man made objects.
Project Educate Stock & Resources DD CriteriaStock & Resources Daily Deviations.  What We look for, and what you should look for as well!
Its a regular question, and something that the other Community Volunteers get asked about as well. So during Project Educate Stock & Resources week I'm going to try and lay out some of the reasons behind our choices.
Stock & Resources Daily Deviations, and how they are judged by the Community.
Dan has already touched on this touchy subject in his "Potential" Article here - The Potential of Stock
There is something fundamentally different about stock & resources DD's compared to all the other DD's from all the other galleries.
Stock & Resources are NOT finished artworks to be viewed as an end product.
We can't stress this enough!!!
The Stock Artist/Provider/Creator has not submitted this work becasue they think its absolutely perfect and they want to show it off, they subm
My Photomanip DD GuidelinesHello everyone!
I gladly welcome all Daily Deviation (DD) suggestions and am always excited to receive them from you. Here are some things to keep in mind to help increase your suggested deviation's chances of being accepted as a Daily Deviation! :w00t!:
DDs are meant to showcase the best deviations that the community has to offer. Anyone, popular or not, can receive a DD if they do exemplary work. That means you! :D For a better understanding of what they are and their purpose, you can visit :faq61:.

No matter how phenomenal it is, I cannot even consider your suggestion:

I may consider Mixed Media (Digital Art > Mixed Media).] See Continuing the Photomanip Conversation. If the artist does not credit stock sources properly by, at the very least, linking to the stock artist's page or the
Harassment: A Survival GuideIt's no secret that the members of deviantART are an opinionated bunch! For good or ill, there is always plenty to say about art that speaks to them. This is great, yet amidst those opinions you're bound to get reactions that are nothing more than word pollution or troll bait. How many of you have logged into deviantART and been faced with this problem?

We've all seen it, been a victim of it, or at least heard about it: Folk out in the digital world living for nothing more than the joy of ruffling peoples' feathers. Well not to worry dear reader, because I've compiled a survivor's guide on how to slay the beast of text pollution: le trolls!

Clarifying an Issue with Stock ResourcesThere appears to be a fair amount of misunderstanding on the subject of stock resources so what I would like to do today is attempt to clarify several issues which are of importance to the artists who generously provide stock resources to the public for use and hopefully dispel the confusion and misinformation which is beginning to circulate.
The first issue at hand is in regards to your personal stock terms

Your Personal Stock Terms
Officially deviantART maintains only one "automatic" restriction and that is "No Commercial Use" and that particular restriction can easily be overridden by the actual stock provider.
As far as official policy is concerned each stock resource provider is free to attach any Terms of Use, restrictions or requirements that they see fit and our moderation staff will do the best we can to help you enforce your rules when you need that sort of assistance.
We only ask a few things from you in return;

Stock and Resources UpdatesLETS TALK ABOUT STOCK "REQUESTS"
Every year we get excited, eager, passionate new stock providers entering our small but growing community, and every year these new stock models in particular get targeted by a small group of "requesters" Those of us who have been on the site for more than a few years recognise the types of "requests" I'm talking about and know to absolutely avoid them at all costs, but its something that I've seen more and more regularly over the last few months, and its definitely a concern.
There are standard "pose requests" that are NOT requested for the "artist" to work from.  They are simply asking you to take photos of yourself in provocative poses so they can get off to your stock.
Firstly - please keep in mind that the images you are providing to artists are STOCK ART - they are first and foremost designed to provide artists with useable, useful references, either for traditional art, or digital art or whatever media they choose to create

Premade Backgrounds and Group Submission ChangesToday we’re going to address the “Circle of Stock.” Cue Disney’s “The Lion King” theme song and call me Mufasa. Just like in the circle of life, what we do affects another group, and returns to affect us again. We have a responsibility to the artists that use our stock to provide legitimate and safe stock resources. As an administrator for a few art groups as well as stock groups, I have seen what happens to the artists who use invalid stock resources. They have had their art declined, or had to replace stock elements through no fault of their own.  This especially includes those who includes celebrity or otherwise copyrighted material, even if it was uploaded to the Resources and Stocks section of :devart:. It isn’t fair to the artists who use the “stock” and hurts the credibility of not only the stock provider who uploads it, but the stock community itself.
Premade backgrounds have always seemed to be flo

Hi! My name is Cheryl. I am one of three Stock and Resources Community Volunteers! I am always happy to help, and I promise that I don’t bite. :D

  • I only take Stock and Resources Daily Deviation Suggestions. I will not be able to feature any suggestion that is not listed in the parent section of Stock and Resources.
  • Please double check to be sure that the deviant hasn't already received a Daily Deviation within the past 6 months. FAQ #313: How can I find out if someone already has a Daily Deviation?
A quick way to do this is to type “theirdevname . deviantart . com/dds” into your browsers address bar.
  • Send your suggestions to only ONE Community Volunteer!
  • When suggesting a DD, please send one suggestion per note! If you have multiple suggestions, please send them in separate notes. It will help me keep them organized. If you can’t choose which piece by one person to suggest because they are just that awesome, you may send multiple thumbs for me to choose from. :) Try to limit it to three thumbs from one person at the most.

How to suggest

Send me a note with the title DD Suggestion. Include the thumb code along with the reason why you think the piece deserves a Daily Deviation.

I will try to reply to all of the suggestions, but I may not be able to. I promise to thoroughly consider each suggestion sent my way, though. :dalove:

I will be away tomorrow until Tuesday, Dec. 18th.

Step One

Make a post to your DA journal. The post should contain your list of ten holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a ______ icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("all I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV."). The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your DA or link to this post so that the holiday joy will spread.

Step Two

Surf around your friends list (or friends' friends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now, here's the important part:

If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use -- do it.

You need not spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf -- to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not -- it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Give, and you might receive. and you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

My Wishlist

1. I'd love to have an animated pixel emote icon based on my name, Celtic Storm, for my avatar icon.

2.  I really want more deviants to participate in the Community Feature Project; If I Could DD

3. I think it would be so awesome if GrimFace242 created a font set of his handwriting! It's very cool. :giggle: P.S. Thank you for the card, Grimmsy!

4. I would love for my watchers to create art using my stock as a digital Christmas present for my Momma, ThruCarolsEyes-Stock. She's a fantastic mom and does so much for everyone in the family. She's had a rough few years after my stepdad passed away and then me being sick with cancer, along with a few other family members being seriously ill. She takes care of everyone and expects nothing in return, so it would be nice to surprise her with pretty art. I will give free links to my regular stocks if you want to get involved. :D

5.  I'd love it if anyone could donate points to The--Stock-Directory so we can have a stock related contest for the new year. That page is the donation page for the group The-Stock-Directory, but the contest would be open to all of the S&R community.

6. I REALLY want the powers that be on Deviant Art to create the ability to have sub folders in our favorites. I want to be able to move existing folders into a master folder to appease the intense need for organization in my little soul for the favorites.

7. I want people to put aside their differences and love one another. There has been a fair bit of drama in our communities lately. Let's put aside the pitch forks, torches, and clique mindsets and work together on creating a better deviant art experience. When it comes to the "I know it all" egos... just remember what Elsa said: LET IT GOOOOOOOOOO!

8. I want to have a community chat event soon. I want both the stock community, and the manip/artist community that uses our stocks to participate to see how we can work together and improve together.

9. I want everyone to have a safe and wonderful holiday season, no matter what holiday you celebrate. Even if you don't have anyone there with you to celebrate with, remember, there are people here that value and love you!

10. I want to have a Midwest DevMeet sometime in the new year in Springfield, Missouri. (Spring or Summer-ish) That way deviants from the four state area can have one that's not in LA or NY. :giggle: I always thought it would be a blast to have a camp-out DevMeet where we all go camping together and go on a float trip rafting down the river. (note: my idea of rafting is NOT white water.. it's lazily floating down a gentle river on a gigantic raft with a cooler full of Dr. Pepper and munchies in the middle with a bit of fishing in there somewhere.)

People I am tagging

Elandria, PirateLotus-Stock, Aeirmid GrimFace242, ginkgografix, and anyone else that wants to participate. :D
